| Q 1.1: Why does my browser sometimes hang or it shows
an "old" page? |
|
A :You may be accessing cached (saved) pages from your PC rather than refreshing
pages from our server. This is a supposedly useful "trick" that browsers use to
speed up responses. When you use caching, every time you go to a page, the
browser saves a copy of that page on your PC. If you ever ask for the same page
again, instead of going all the way to the source, the browser quickly shows
you a picture of the saved page. This does not work very well if the data is
live, changes frequently or if you are accessing sophisticated programs such as
GigaSports.com over the net.
To fix this in:
Internet Explorer 6
Internet Explorer 7
Firefox 2
Safari : This should not occur as Safari does not use caching.
|
| Q 1.2: I didn't find the answer I was looking for. What
now? |
| A : The FAQ section is a living document, we may
not yet have gotten around to answering your question. E-mail us and we'll
respond promptly and then we may re-format your question and insert it in here. |
| Q 1.3: Do you have a forum where we can sound off? |
| A : We have a very active and informative forum.
That allows users to communicate and also have fun! If you don't find your
answers here in the FAQ, why not post a message in our forums. There are forums
for your ladders and clubs too! |

| Cookies and logging on |
| Q 2.1: What is a cookie?
|
| A : A cookie is a small text file that is
written to your PC's hard drive by a web site. Our cookie stores your user
identification number on your PC. This cookie is then used to automatically log
you in next time you visit our site. |
| Q 2.2: Why does the site need to be secure? |
A : There are many reasons why you wouldn't want
other to access the site with your user name / password:
-
Your profile keeps your personal contact details - you would want to be in
control of what you allow other players to see.
-
Your profile can send e-mails to others.
-
Your profile can book courts (if your club has subscribed to this option)
|
| Q 2.3: Why am I having problems logging in? |
A : There can be a number of reasons:
-
You forgot your password. Use the on-line help system. It will e-mail you your
password. If you have forgotten you user name AND your password it's a bit more
complicated, but it will still e-mail you your password. If you are still
unsuccessful, ask your club professional, administrator or the club front desk.
They won't help you if you haven't tried the on-line help first.
-
Your security level on your browser is set too high. Aim for Medium to
Medium-low
-
You have disabled cookies. As a minimum you should allow session cookies (these
are not written to your hard drive and expire when you shut the browser down).
|
| Q 2.4: I'm on a public PC. How can I stop the cookie
from being stored on this PC? |
| A : Check the "Increase security" or "Public PC"
check box before you log on. This ensures that a cookie is not written to the
PC. |
| Q 2.5: How can I permanently stop the cookie from being stored on our club's public PC? |
A : Set your PC not to accept cookies.
Firefox is the preferred browser for this situation. Ask members to always close their browser when they're done.
Firefox 2
|
| Q 2.6: I need to log on with another user name and am
having difficulty in doing so. |
| A : Click on "Logout" in the menu. It should
take you to the log on page, log on again. Remember, the cookie will always
allow automatic access to the last user name that logged in. |

| Starting a new box or challenge ladder |
Back to top |
| Q 3.1: Why would I want another ladder at our club? |
| A : You can have a ladder for every type of
sub-group you can think of. For example, you could have a men's, women's,
Juniors, Seniors or Baby Boomers ladder ... or all of the above! |
| Q 3.2: How many ladders can we have at our club? |
| A : As many as you like. Generally, you will
find that a box ladder system needs at least 10 or so people on it (say two
boxes of 5 each) and a challenge ladder would similarly need about 10 to be
effective. |
| Q 3.3: How do I start a new box or challenge ladder? |
| A : Write to us and we will set it up for you. |
| Q 3.4: How do bonus points in a box ladder work? |
| A : Our bonus point system is very flexible.
Please see more details in the Products/Box Ladder page |

| Scorecards |
| Q 4.1: Who enters match results? |
A : It would be preferable if the player more
likely to input the game details inputs the result, however either player can
do it. At some clubs, the GameMaster (owner and administrator of the ladder)
has to input the bulk of the matches as players are too lazy or don't care.
Don't be a user ... put something back into the system - input your matches! |
| Q 4.2: Do we need a referee? |
| A : No, not normally. However, we will soon be
publishing two ratings for all players, an informal one and an official rating.
Official ratings will be calculated using refereeed matches which are played in
organised events such as those that are sponsored by national, state/provincial
or regional associations.
|
| Q 4.3: I see different scorecards. Which do I use? |
A : There are 3 main scorecards and a club may
set custom names for each. One is dedicated to inputing box ladder matches. You
may not have this if you are not on a box ladder. This scorecard will also
register challenges if both players are on the same challenge ladder.
You choice between the other two depends on whether you have the score at a
game level of only at the match level. For example, in tennis, if you beat
someone 6-1; 6-3; 6-0. As you know the games scores use the games-score
scorecard. If on the other hand you only remember winning 3-0, use the match
scorecard.
You can use either scorecard, but remember that when you analyze an opponents
history, knowing game scores can provide valuable information.
|
| Q 4.4: How do I input a score? |
A : This should be intuitive, but here's some
guidance for the match scorecard: Enter date unless the match was played today,
in which case the system will automatically use today's date.
Your name appears as both winner and loser boxes, if you won the match select
an opponent from the Loser button. If you lost the match select an opponent
from the winner button. To select an opponent click on the name and a search
box will pop up. Please ensure that you do not have pop-ups disabled for the
GigaSports website. Type in the first few letters of the last name and a list
of names will appear. Select your opponent from this list click "Select". Two
names will now appear on the scorecard.
Under "Match Score" click on the little radio button that reflects your score,
a black dot will appear on this button.
If you wish to make a note about this game enter it in the blank box, great
tool for helping you keep track of your opponents strengths and weaknesses.
Click "Save Score and Game note".
A confirmation screen will pop up, click "Save" and your match has now been
recorded.
|
| Q 4.5: How do I delete a scorecard? |
A : Click on one of the two players in the match
and then view his/her match history. Click on the small garbage can next to the
match result to delete the match.
Only the person who input the scorecard can delete it. If you did not input the
match, the garbage can will not appear. If somone has input an incorrect card
against you and will not or can not delete it and re-input it, contact us.
|
| Q 4.6: Do I have to enter the match date? |
| A : If you don't enter a date for the match, the
system will insert today's date. |
|
|
| E-mail |
| Q 5.1: If I email someone, where to I find my reply? |
| A : The player you wrote to will write back
directly to you. In other words, it's in your regular email inbox. All we do is
put (and keep) players in contact with each other. |
| Q 5.2: How private is the e-mail I send? |
| A : Every e-mail that gets sent is copied to our
Mailroom postbox. Occasionally, an e-mail is not delivered and we receive a
"Delivery Failed" notification from the server it was sent to. We then look
through the mail in the Mailroom to advise the original sender of the delivery
failure. We will also look through the mailroom for reported or obvious abuses
of the system. Other than that, your e-mail is private. |
| Q 5.3: How protected is my e-mail address? |
A : Only you can see and change your e-mail
address on the system
However, when you send an e-mail to someone, you are (in that e-mail) showing
them your e-mail address. They can then correspond directly to you, outside of
the system. |

| Browsers |
| Q 6.1: I'm using Opera as my browser. Why are my
colours not loading well? |
| A : The default Opera installation is optimized
for speed and sometimes it caches too many parts of a page. Go to
Tools/Preferences/History and Cache and Check documents, images and Other
"Always". |
